Fires and stoves burn fuel to provide heat for a living or working area. The economics of this are simple. The more efficient the appliance and the control of waste heat losses, the more effective the utilisation of the fuel source and the lower the costs of operating the process. The key to this efficiency can often be simply the use of high performance insulation to control heat loss to the building structure around the appliance and from the chimney or flue. This will ensure that heat goes only where it is wanted and Promat HPI have special solutions designed to make this happen.
Promat HPI solutions can make a difference
A traditional open fire, although still used in some older properties, is becoming a thing of the past. With much of the heat generated disappearing up the chimney, an open coal fire was only 25 % efficient at best with a log fire even worse. A modern multi-fuel or wood burning stove can be up to 85 % efficient. Although sometimes seen as a freestanding unit, these are more conventionally built into a fireplace.

Where the heat can go
A freestanding stove is free to radiate heat in all directions. Natural convection can also occur uninhibited. It can be helpful to stand these appliances on insulation and it is certainly beneficial to insulate the flue as discussed in the chimney and flue applications tab. When a stove is contained in a fireplace, the challenge is to ensure that the heat generated flows forward into the living area and does not simply dissipate into the building and fireplace structure around the fire. Application solutions

Fireplace surround

The Promat HPI PROMAFOUR® system includes everything necessary to install and finish off a stove in a stylish setting. PROMAFOUR® construction boards used in the surround to the stove are composed of calcium silicate and cement. This results in very strong walls, even with minimal thicknesses of 12 mm, 15 mm or 18 mm. Also heavier objects, such as frames, paintings and flat screens can be attached to the wall without additional strengthening. PROMAFOUR® construction boards can be easily cut with traditional woodworking equipment and installed using standard screws, staples and refractory PROMAFOUR®-GLUE 1000.

The construction boards are finished with a smooth surface – perfect for a finishing coat of paint on top of PROMAFOUR® PRIMER. Thanks to minimal expansion and contraction during and after heating, the risk of cracks, microscopic fissures or deformation is reduced to an absolute minimum.

Thanks to the high thermal storage capacity of PROMAFOUR® construction boards, fireplaces will continue to emit heat, even after the fire is extinguished. The emitted heat is distributed evenly around the living room.
Wall and floor insulation

Wall and floor insulation is necessary to prevent the heat generated by the stove from leaking into the building structure around the appliance. The PROMASIL® high performance calcium silicate range of boards is perfect for this function. By insulating your fireplace floor and rear wall with a PROMASIL®-1000L or PROMASIL® -950KS board, the loss of heat is reduced to a bare minimum.

PROMASIL®-1000L and PROMASIL®- 950KS boards are lightweight calcium silicate insulating boards with very good thermal properties. Their homogeneous and stable mineral matrix structure guarantees excellent mechanical and thermal characteristics.

PROMASIL®-1000L boards (50 mm thickness) have been tested in accordance with the Test Rules for Solid Fuel.

PROMASIL®- 950KS boards are small size insulating boards. In accordance with the German building authority approval no. Z-43. 14.139, PROMASIL®- 950KS is certified for use as thermal insulation and brickwork in open fireplaces and chimneys in accordance with EN 13229, and also for tiled and plastered stoves.

Fire and stove insulation

To achieve high heat efficiency of fireplaces, the inside as well as the immediate outside of the fire or stove needs to be insulated and properly sealed with appropriate refractory high temperature insulation and sealing.
